FOUR ADVENTURE TRAVEL VIDEOS FOR DECEMBER 2018

What are the necessary and sufficient conditions for adventure travel? First, it’s clear adventure travel is different from a holiday. Sure, holidays can have adventurous aspects, say your car breaks down miles from the nearest town or you decide to do a risky, fun tourist activity. Certainly adventurous but not really consistent with the spirit of the usual understanding of adventure travel. So what is adventure travel? Maybe it’s easier to show rather than tell.

For the December Travel and Moto Videos feature, we’ll highlight four travel films that might be considered adventure travel. Have a watch and see for yourself.

CROSSING AFRICA AND THE SAHARA BY TRUCK

Like an old fashion slideshow, the first video uses photos to document an overland truck journey. As a travel experience, African truck overland trips are popular, especially among young people. However, the really adventurous take their own truck. In a well produced video, a series of colour slides, shot during the trip in 1959-60, are put to music along with an interesting voiceover narration by one of the travellers. The trip covers parts of Europe, north Africa including the Sahara Desert, and some central African countries.

FAMILY OF 5 IN A TINY LAND ROVER FOR EPIC 9-MONTH OVERLAND TRAVEL

This video is an interview style, short documentary about a family that drove from London to Singapore in an old Land Rover. Inspired by a 50th anniversary meetup of participants of a London to Singapore trip by Land Rover, the family decided to recreate the journey a few years later. No need for the latest, most advance 4WD, in fact, the vehicle you own is probably fine for most long distance adventure trips. However a sixty two year old Land Rover may not be the first choice for most people.

BIKEPACKING THROUGH SOUTH AMERICA PART 1 of 2

A bicycle is a fantastic, low cost mode of transport for adventure travel. It can be relatively easily packed and transported to your destination, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace. In this vlog style documentary, follow a bunch of friends travel through South American. This is part one of a two part YouTube travel video.

MOTORCYCLE DIARIES - A JOURNEY TO THE HIGHEST VILLAGE IN THE WORLD

Another vlog style documentary set in South America, but this time by motorcycle. Two friends fly to Peru for a motorcycle adventure. Their journey starts in Arequipa and covers part of the Pan American Highway, the Nazca Desert, the Andes mountain range, Machu Picchu, and the Puno Region of Peru bordered by Bolivia, then back to Arequipa.
